Oil Teaching

The oil itself is not magical but a tangible expression of faith and a reminder of God's presence and power.

In the Old Testament:
  • Consecration: The "holy anointing oil" was used to consecrate priests, kings, prophets, and objects in the Tabernacle. This marked them as set apart for God's service and indicated the Holy Spirit's presence.
  • Healing: The Good Samaritan parable shows oil used with bandages to heal wounds.
  • Cosmetic & Scent: Oil was also used as a cosmetic, perfume, and hairstyle oil.
  • Burial: It was used in preparations for burial.
In the New Testament:
  • Healing and Deliverance:
Jesus' disciples anointed the sick with oil, leading to healing and the casting out of demons.
  • Worship:
A woman anointing Jesus' feet was an act of sacrificial worship and devotion.
  • Signifying the Holy Spirit:
Jesus mentions the "everyday practice" of anointing with oil, linking it to a visible manifestation of God's presence.

Bible Verses:
Old Testament
Exodus 30:22-33: God gives Moses the formula for a sacred anointing oil, a mixture of spices and olive oil, to be used to consecrate the Tabernacle, its furniture, and the priests. (I will reproduce this oil.)
  • Leviticus 21:10: This verse mentions that the High Priest's head was anointed with the oil, and he was to remain consecrated.
  • 1 Samuel 16:13: Samuel anoints David as king, setting him apart for God's purpose.
  • New Testament
  • Jesus quotes Isaiah, stating the Spirit of the Lord is upon Him to "anoint" Him to preach the gospel.
  • Elders are instructed to pray over the sick and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord for healing.
  • This verse uses "anointing" metaphorically, referring to the Holy Spirit's teaching and guidance that abides in believers.
  • God is said to have anointed Christ "with the oil of gladness".
  • Modern Use:
    • Symbolic Meaning:
For many Christians, applying anointing oil is a physical act expressing their spiritual belief in God's presence, protection, and provision.
    • Personal Blessing:
Believers may anoint themselves, their homes, or loved ones as a prayerful act of faith and a way to invoke God's blessing, protection, and healing, especially in times of sickness or difficulty.
    • A Reminder of Wholeness:
The act of crushing olives to make oil symbolizes Christ being "crushed" for our salvation, providing healing, restoration, and freedom from bondage, according to some interpretations.
